I Didn’t Quit Bread. I Just Quit the Energy Crash - Here Is The Truth About Bread!

Why Bread Isn’t Helping You Feel Energised (And How We Became So Dependent On It)

Bread isn’t evil. It’s ancient, cultural and it helped build civilisation, but it wasn’t designed for the life we live now.

So if you constantly feel tired, foggy, or stuck in the 3pm slump… Bread may be playing a bigger role than you realise!

Bread Was A Survival Food — Not A Performance Food

When humans shifted from hunter-gatherers to agriculture, grains changed everything. In places like Ancient Egypt, bread became a dietary foundation because it was cheap, storable, and efficient. It could feed large populations consistently, so it was the same for the Roman Empire who famously kept social stability through “bread and circuses.”

Bread quite literally maintained order and stopped the people rising up - it was used as a means of control because for most of human history, bread was all about survival. It’s goal was to prevent starvation and provide basic calories. To sustain hard labour, and keep the masses fuelled. 💪

But survival energy is not the same as optimal energy. Is it?

Bread was never designed to stabilise blood sugar or for a modern, desk-based, low-movement lifestyle.

It was designed purely to keep people alive.

Industrialisation Changed Bread Forever

Before the Industrial Revolution, bread was denser, coarser, and contained more fibre and nutrients.

Then when roller milling arrived, white flour became refined, stripped of fibre, softer, fluffier, and faster to digest.

And this caused a problem for us, because the more refined the grain, the faster it converts to glucose in the bloodstream.

That means:

• Blood sugar rises quickly
• Insulin rises quickly
• Energy drops quickly
• Cravings increase

What feels like “low energy” is often just unstable blood sugar.

So, that afternoon crash? It’s frequently not age, not willpower dying, not even your hormones.

It’s the spike–crash cycle.

We Have Become Carbohydrate-Dependent

Grains were reliable, accessible, and affordable. Over centuries, they became central to daily eating patterns.

Today:

Breakfast = toast
Lunch = sandwich
Dinner = wrap, pasta, pizza, garlic bread

It all feels so normal and automatic doesn’t it? We chow down on it without question.

But when something is:

• Cheap
• Convenient
• Everywhere
• Highly palatable

It becomes habitual. And that habit doesn’t ask whether something gives you energy. It just repeats on autopilot.

Modern refined bread digests quickly. It stimulates reward pathways in the brain. It encourages “just one more slice.”

It is designed this way on purpose, companies make money selling it… The more you eat the more money they make.

They want you to eat as much of it as possible and they don’t care if you gain weight, get diabetes or struggle with energy levels every afternoon at the office!

The Brain Loves Fast Carbs — But Our Energy Suffers

The reality is that refined bread metabolically behaves very similarly to sugar.

It breaks down rapidly into glucose. That rapid rise triggers insulin. And when insulin clears glucose from the bloodstream, energy dips.

When energy dips, our cortisol rises to compensate.

And that can feel like:

• Irritability
• Brain fog
• Anxiety
• “I need something sweet”
• Restlessness

So we reach for food again and we get hit with cravings.

Not because we’re greedy, or because we lack discipline.
But because our body is just responding to a rapid energy shift.

The cravings come as a message to tell us our body needs something. (And I promise you it’s not more sugar or bread that will make you feel better!)

Bread Made Sense When We Moved All Day

Historically, people walked miles daily. They performed manual labour. They lived physically demanding lives.

Fast carbohydrates were a useful fuel because they were burned quickly.

But today, many of us sit for hours. We move less. We expend less energy overall, and when carbohydrate intake remains high but output drops, the body struggles to maintain stable energy.

Instead of:

Fuel → Burn → Refuel

We experience:

Fuel → Store → Crash → Crave → Repeat

This is a pattern that bread (and other processed carbs) can cause and then keeps us locked into. We often don’t even notice this because we are not monitoring how we feel after we have eaten… only during.

Why Removing Bread Often Improves Energy

When we reduce refined bread, they often report:

• Fewer energy crashes
• Less bloating
• More stable mood
• Reduced cravings
• Clearer thinking

Not because bread is “bad.” But because stabilising blood sugar stabilises energy.

And stable energy feels calm. Focused. Steady.
It feels amazing when our blood sugar is steady. I know for me it’s been life changing!

There’s nothing morally wrong with bread, I just stopped eating it regularly simply because I felt so incredible without it!!

So if you feel like you might be:

• Dependent on it
• Out of control around it
• Sluggish after it
• Craving more shortly after eating it

It may be worth questioning whether it’s serving you and your energy — or draining it.

Sometimes the most powerful shift isn’t extreme restriction. It’s removing the autopilot.

Bread may have built civilisation, but it doesn’t have to build your blood sugar rollercoaster.

And energy isn’t about eating more. It’s about stabilising what you eat.

This is the sort of stuff we focus on in our program. Learning what makes us feel great in midlife and what doesn’t!
